Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker competitor in the world by many of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the adverse comments from other people kill his goal of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.

He began playing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a learning period and winning was not a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an undying passion for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is very abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and constantly aspires to improve.

Even though Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
