Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to learn whatever he could about the game. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the detrimental comments from other people kill his ambition of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.

Phil started competing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a teaching experience and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated a number of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. Phil admits to making errors in each game of poker and always aspires to get better.

Although Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
